LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Cancer survivors and those affected by cancer in the Jones County area geared up for Relay for Life of Jones County on Friday.

Kelley McKee, lead radiation therapist and marketing director for Laurel Cancer Care, said this is meant to bring the community together.

"The survivors just come to this event to see other people that have fought the fight and that are continuing to fight," McKee said. "It's just to encourage them to keep fighting."

The event is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society, according to Relay for Life. McKee said it's about taking a stand against cancer.

"It's kind of like a companionship for other survivors," said McKee. "For them to know that it's like a family and to know that they are fighting this fight together."

Attendees will be walking along the fairgrounds until midnight to signify that cancer never sleeps.

McKee said it's heartwarming to see people fighting against cancer know that they're not alone.

"It's makes our heart happy," said McKee. "That's why we do this. We're excited to see those purple shirts. It's just very heartwarming to see them."

Other activities happening during the event include a lighting of luminarias with a moment of silence to honor every life touched by cancer

The Laurel Cancer Care will be hosting a Relay for Life Survivors Celebration Luncheon April 23, at 6:00 p.m. at the The Gables on 1915 Bush Dairy Road in Laurel.

McKee said all survivors, those who attended Relay for Life as well as those who didn't, are permitted to bring one guest.

You can RSVP by calling 601-425-2999 or by emailing kmckee@laurelcancercare.com.
