LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Bad weather Saturday prompted emergency management officials in Jones County to open their community disaster shelter.

The FEMA 361 Safe Room on Ellisville Boulevard opened around 7 a.m. and stayed open until around one p.m., when a tornado watch for Jones County was lifted.

Emergency Management director Marda Tullos said only about a half dozen people stayed at the shelter during the rough weather.

"It's just short-term to get out of the danger of the storm, it's what it's for," said Tullos. "It's well worth going if you need to."

The facility is designed to withstand wind speed of 250 miles per hour for three-second gusts.
