HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Southern Miss continues to prepare for its spring football game on April 21 and no one is happier to be back on the practice field than Picasso Nelson Jr.

The redshirt senior returns this season after missing all of 2017 with an ankle injury. Before going down, Nelson Jr. recorded 143 tackles and four interceptions in his three years.

Losing eight defensive back to graduation, the Golden Eagles will lean on Nelson Jr. and his experience this upcoming season.

“Honestly, words can't describe it,” said Nelson Jr., an Oak Grove grad. “Sitting out last year really hurt, more than I can really explain. I’m just blessed to be out here, blessed to be back healthy. I’m really just trying to take it one day at a time and really just smell the roses. And just enjoy the moment of being healthy.”

“I’m excited about having him back,” said USM head coach Jay Hopson. “When he got hurt last year, we were a little worried. Picasso and I talked about it, we felt it was best for him to sit. It wound up being a blessing for the program too because Kelsey [Douglas] did a good job last year but it allowed us to have a senior veteran back there leading our secondary.”
