COVINGTON COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Firefighters battled a house fire in Covington County Friday night.

According to Southwest Covington County Fire Department Fire Chief Danny Beasley, around 11:55 p.m. a call came in about a house fire on Richmond Road in Sumrall. Beasley says the family believes the home was struck by lighting.

Beasley said when they arrived on the scene, the roof had been burned through. The family, who was home at the time of the incident, says they were sleeping when they heard a loud boom. Beasley says that's when the family said they smelled smoke, and immediately dialed 911.

There were no injuries following the fire, but Beasley said the home was a total loss.

The Sanford, Seminary, Hickory Grove, and Sumrall Volunteer Fire Departments all assisted during fire.
