Hattiesburg family displaced by tornado gets a new home

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Another Hattiesburg family who weathered the January 2017 tornado has received the keys to their new home and start.

Volunteers with Recover, Rebuild, Restore South Mississippi dedicated the house Friday morning. Home is where the heart is, and now, a family at 212 Barry Street can call this place home once again.

Ozia Booth and his wife sat trapped in the dark and pouring rain as the tornado passed over their home. Today, that night is just a memory.

Mennonite Disaster Service worked from January of this year until now, not letting weather or need for more volunteers slow down their progress. This is the 11th home dedicated to families displaced by the tornado.

"Whatever they were planning on doing, they did. The house is beautiful. My wife hadn't seen the inside, but I know she'll love it," said Ozia Booth, the homeowner.

There are still 12 more to go. It's not too late to pick up a hammer and help with recovery efforts.

Just contact R3SM, and they'll help you help the Pine Belt as the road to recovery continues.
