LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

The Laurel Fire Department will be purchasing a new ladder truck for its department in the near future.

This comes after the Laurel City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night for the measure during its regular session. The current ladder truck has been deemed too old by the Fire Rating Bureau to support the current needs of the city.

Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee said the new ladder truck is critical to serve the city.

“Any building that’s over one-story, a ladder truck is very, very important,” Magee said. “That’s the reason we need it, in order to protect and serve both the businesses and citizens of Laurel.”

Without it, the fire rating could jump from the city’s current rating of five. The new ladder truck should arrive in about four months and will be located at Central Station 1.
