BILOXI, MS (WDAM) - From William Carey University Sports Information Department
For a second consecutive year, the William Carey University baseball team will play an exhibition game against the Biloxi Shuckers, the Double-A, minor-league affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
The teams will meet at 6:35 p.m. on April 3 at MGM Park in Biloxi. Tickets are $7 and will be general admission seating.
The Shuckers hosted Carey in an exhibition game in 2017 as a relief fundraiser after the school's Hattiesburg campus was hit hard by a tornado that January. Money raised from next week's game will go towards the continuing recovery in Hattiesburg as well as support of Carey's branch on the Coast, "The Tradition."
"I really appreciate the Shuckers allowing our team to play an exhibition game," Carey coach Bobby Halford said in a release from the school's sports information department. "To expose our team and university to a first-class operation is a great experience for our guys."
The game will feature wooden bats and last at least seven innings. The exhibition will serve as a tune-up for the Shuckers before they open their 2018 schedule.
"We really enjoyed partnering with William Carey University last season, so we didn't hesitate to reach out to them again when the Brewers were interested in having the Shuckers play in an exhibition game prior to Open Day this year," Biloxi general manager Hunter Reed said in the release.
"The Crusaders have an excellent baseball program and it will be a great way to start the Shuckers' season while continuing to show our support."
Halford is in his 33rd season with the Crusaders and has led them to 16 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championships and six NAIA District 30 titles. Under his tutelage, Carey has played in 19 NAIA regional tournaments.
An eight-time selection as GCAC Coach of the Year, Halford was named 2017 NAIA Coach of the Year after taking the Crusaders to a 45-20 record and a berth in the Avista-NAIA World Series.
The Shuckers open the 2018 Southern League season on April 5, traveling to Montgomery, Ala., to take on the Biscuits, the Double-Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Ray.
Biloxi opens its home schedule on April 11 against the Mississippi Braves, the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
