LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The West Jones Mustangs are off to a 14-1 start following Saturday's 15-0 win over Columbia Academy.

Hattiesburg folks probably remember the Mustangs' head coach, Trey Sutton, for his time at Southern Miss from 2005-08. Sutton's 337 career hits remain a USM record.

A West Jones alum, Sutton is in his second season as the head baseball coach. He recognizes how tough baseball is in South Mississippi – especially in class 5A.

"Mississippi high school baseball on the whole is I think undervalued across the country," Sutton said. "There's a lot of good teams, a lot of good players. And you look at this particular area, the 30 mile radius around Hattiesburg has a lot of good baseball teams. You look at our district with South Jones, Wayne County and Laurel, it's a grind every year to come out of that district. You look beyond that – you've got Hattiesburg and Pearl River Central and teams on the coast. It's going to be a grind."
