MISSISSIPPI (WDAM) - Mississippi is ranked third in the nation for having the highest average GPA nationwide, according to Insurify.

With college application season coming to a close and graduation season approaching, data scientists from the insurance company decided to investigate how high school GPAs vary from one state to another.

Because state-specific SAT performance data is readily available and GPA data is not, Insurify used its proprietary dataset consisting of 1.3 million auto insurance applications in which relevant applicants were asked questions about educational performance to complete the analysis.

The GPA data in the article was based on a sample set of 40,000 high school students who submitted their GPAs to the Insurify website.

Results showed that the average GPA for students nationwide was 3.23, but the results varied widely across individuals and states.

The list was as followed:
  1. South Carolina
  2. West Virginia
  3. Mississippi- (Avg. GPA: 3.42, Avg. SAT score: 1242, High school graduation rate: 82.3%)
  4. North Carolina
  5. Virginia
  6. Illinois
  7. Massachusetts
  8. Texas
  9. Tennessee
  10. Florida

Mississippi ranked in the top five with an impressive state average GPA of 3.42, which is a high B plus. The state also set the bar with its SAT score averaging an impressive 1242 state average, the highest of any state listed in the article.
