PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Residents in Petal may feel a little safer after knowing they are ranked number one as the safest city in Mississippi. According to the National Council for Home Safety and Security, the 10, 000 plus resident town has a violent crimes rate 15 times lower than the statewide average.
The report considers Petal's property crime rate of 7.63 per 1,000 to be "impressive."
Madison, Brandon, Long Beach and Hernando round out the top five, respectively. Madison, which is a suburb of Jackson, 19 on the list, has a violent crime rate of 0.54 per 1,000.
Out of 25, Hattiesburg is considered the 21st safest city in Mississippi while Laurel is the 14th.
