Residents in Petal may feel a little safer after knowing they are ranked number one as the safest city in Mississippi. According to the National Council for Home Safety and Security, the 10, 000 plus resident town has a violent crimes rate 15 times lower than the statewide average. 

The report considers Petal's property crime rate of 7.63 per 1,000 to be "impressive."

Madison, Brandon, Long Beach and Hernando round out the top five, respectively. Madison, which is a suburb of Jackson, 19 on the list, has a violent crime rate of 0.54 per 1,000. 

Out of 25, Hattiesburg is considered the 21st safest city in Mississippi while Laurel is the 14th.

    The Mississippi Department of Corrections has locked down all prisons in its system for the weekend.  MDOC announced the weekend lockdown on Twitter on Friday, saying that there would be no visitation, commissary or outside recreation this weekend.     With inclement weather expected Sunday, the University of Southern Mississippi will wrap up its Conference USA baseball series with Middle Tennessee State University with a Saturday doubleheader at Pete Taylor Park. The first game will start at 1:30 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than the originally-scheduled 2 p.m. start. The second game will begin about 45 minutes at the conclusion of the opener.
