HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The president of Forrest-Lamar Republican Women, Sue Bush, is reacting to the selection of Mississippi's Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce to replace retiring U.S. Senator Thad Cochran.
Wednesday, Gov. Phil Bryant appointed Cindy Hyde-Smith to fill Cochran's Senate seat.
"What an honor to be the first woman United States Senator from Mississippi, so I think he made a wise choice, very wise choice, she's highly-qualified," said Bush.
Cochran is retiring April 1 for health reasons.
Hyde-Smith has made the trip to Hattiesburg a few times to speak to Forrest-Lamar Republican Women.
"She's always asking us to invite her, she's always ready to come whenever we invite her and we love having her at our club, she's just one of us," Bush said.
Hyde-Smith last spoke to Bush's organization in July of 2017.
