HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Traffic on Interstate 59 through Hattiesburg is a mess.

The northbound lanes of the interstate are backed up for miles from Highway 49 to Highway 11. The southbound lanes are also moving slowly from Highway 98 to Highway 49.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has reported several crashes on the interstate.

We know one of the crashes involved a Mississippi Highway patrol vehicle hauling a MHP motorcycle on a trailer. That crash happened near the 4th Street overpass and involved four vehicles.

We’re told the MHP trooper that was driving the vehicle was taken to the hospital by another trooper and is expected to be okay.

It is unclear how long the traffic congestion will continue on Interstate 59.

Heavy rain continues to fall, adding to the already hazardous road conditions.  Drivers should avoid the area if possible.
