HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Work has begun to demolish parts of the old Hattiesburg Police Department in preparation for construction of a new facility.

Codaray Construction, LLC was awarded the contract for the work, which will take several months. The cost of the project is about $500,000.

Before demolition can begin, all asbestos from the site must be removed.

Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker said a 1920s portion of the property, which had been part of the old Methodist Hospital, will be kept, but two mid-century annexes will be torn down.

Barker said some water, sewer and drainage work around the facility would also have to be done.

The mayor said construction of the new public safety complex should take about two years. It will include the police department and municipal court.

Barker expects to have final design plans and financing approved for the project within the next year. He said the city is planning on keeping the cost of the new facility under $30 million.
