HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

In December of last year, Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker announced a sewer improvement project for Duke Avenue.

The sewer line has for this neighborhood has now been installed. Barker says now their next step is to get the street paved. However, Mayor Barker says pavement cannot begin until the trench around the sewer line has settled.

"By allowing this sewer trench to be exposed to traffic and weather conditions in its current state, it actually helps the compaction of the material we put into the trench," Barker said. "Basically, by waiting we can ensure a more even and smoother ride long term."

Barker says the settling of the trench can take at least 6 months.

Mayor Barker is asking for residents in these areas to be patient with crews as the improvements continue.

The project is expected to be complete by August.
