HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss is just four days away from opening the Conference USA slate against UTSA on Friday at Pete Taylor Park.

But before then, the Golden Eagles (11-4) visit Tulane (8-8) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Sophomore Walker Powell is expected to make his fourth start of the season on the mound.

USM comes off a 3-1 week which included a sweep of Georgia Southern. The Eagles remain among the top 25 of four major polls including a ranking of No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

"I think we're playing pretty well," said USM head coach Scott Berry. "This is what we call the non-conference, that's what we call the first season. We need to finish that strong before we start season two and that's the conference season mixed in with some non-conference. Very important that we go down [to New Orleans] and continue to play consistent. I think that's been the message with them and the challenge – is to play consistently good baseball, fundamentally that allows you a chance to win."
