FRISCO, Texas (WDAM) -

The University of Southern Mississippi could not overcome a 6 1/2 –minute scoreless stretch in the fourth quarter Wednesday as the University of Texas-El Paso held off the Lady Eagles 72-67 in the opening round  of the 2018 Conference USA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

USM sophomore point guard Shonte Hailes finished with a game-high 23 points and eight assists, but the eighth-seeded Lady Eagles (15-15) saw their season come to an end as the ninth-seeded Lady Miners (17-13) knocked down 21-of-25 free throws, including 8-of-10 in the final minute of the game.

UTEP will take on top-seeded University of Alabama-Birmingham (21-5) at 11 a.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
