LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Just before 6:00 a.m., the Laurel Fire Department responded to a fire at Howard Industries, Inc. in the 3200 block of Pendorff Road. According to Mark Nichols, Laurel Fire Department fire chief, the fire started in a part of the plant that builds transformers. He said two transformers caught on fire inside of an oven.

The area was evacuated as crews worked to extinguish the fire. No other portion of the plant was shut down at the time of the incident.

The fire department is still on scene working what they described as "hot spots." No injuries were reported.

Howard Industries is a billion-dollar company, which consists of four separate divisions including power solutions, technology solutions, lighting products and transportation. The company was created in 1968 by Billy W. Howard, a native of Mississippi.
