USM women's hoops falls to FIU

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss women's basketball ended the regular season Saturday with a 74-70 loss to Florida International.

The Lady Eagles will now focus on the Conference USA tournament next week in Frisco, Texas. They are the eighth seed and will face number nine UTEP at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Lady Eagles had a chance to tie the game at 72 with just seconds left but Shonte Hailes' layup, which seemingly touched every part of the basket, failed to fall. The loss dropped USM to 15-14 on the year (7-8 in C-USA play).

Jayla King paced the team with 21 points to go along with seven boards in her last game at Reed Green Coliseum. She also reached 1,000 points for her career, becoming the 27th Lady Eagle to do so.

Hailes added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Megan Brown had 12 points.
