McKENZIE, Tenn. - Hunter Speer struck out 10 batters over seven shutout innings to help No. 6 William Carey University win its Southern States Athletic Conference baseball opener 2-1 Friday night over Bethel University.
First baseman David Pimentel's two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning gave the Crusaders (15-3, 1-0 SSAC) all the runs it would need.
Dylan Spiers pitched the final two innings, allowing a run in the ninth inning on a double-play grounder. But Spiers got the final out with a strikeout to earn the save.
The teams were to finish the three-game series with a Saturday doubleheader.
