HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - In a swearing-in ceremony at city hall, the Hattiesburg Police Department added four more officers to its ranks Thursday.

Among a crowd of family, friends and officials, the four men each recited the police officer's oath to qualify them to their new positions.

The new officers are Devion White, Shawnasty "O'Brien" Extine, Antonia Conley and Darius Brown.

"One of our goals this year is to get our manpower up in our police department. We need that to make sure that every part of Hattiesburg will remain safe," said Mayor Toby Barker. "We have set a goal for 107 officers this year. To get to number 99 with these, for lateral transfers, is a big step."

These transfers bring the police department's officer number to 99. They will report to the training academy to begin their three-week refresher training course.

The next HPD police academy will begin in the middle of May.
