HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The City of Hattiesburg announced the members of the 2018 Mayor's Youth Council after hosting orientation on Monday.

High school students and their parents attended the orientation hosted by Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker. Representatives from Hattiesburg High School, TIDE School, Sacred Heart High School and Presbyterian Christian School comprise the council, according to a city press release.

Students were given an overview of the program and analyzed Hattiesburg's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, which Barker believed was crucial to seeing the city from students' perspective.

“We walked them through an exercise we lead every time we meet with a neighborhood, and hearing their answers brought a fresh perspective to what we are doing as a city,” Barker said. “Our youth are the Hattiesburg of today and tomorrow, and I believe they have every opportunity to play a vital role in Hattiesburg’s future.”

The council will learn about city and state government and work on group projects that will impact the city.
