Hattiesburg native helps train top pilots at TOPGUN

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg native has a hand in training the Navy's top pilots going through the Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, known to the world as TOPGUN.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jesse Shafer is an aviation ordnanceman at the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center in Fallon, NV.

"I always knew I wanted to work in the weapons field and I knew the Navy would be the best place to build my career," Shafer said in a news release from the Navy.

Shafer is responsible for moving and issuing ordnance to commands and squadrons aboard Naval Air Station Fallon, which is the Navy's premiere tactical warfare training center.

For Shafer, serving in the Navy is part of a long and proud family tradition.

"My great-grandfather and grandfather served in the Navy as well as an uncle in the military," said Shafer.
"Serving in the Navy means seeing new places, meeting new people and experiencing things I never thought I would. I'm proud of what I do."
