Darrel Williams was once known as "Fat Darrel" but at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, he is showing off his slimmer playing weight of 229 pounds "It made a big difference I was able to move better, come out of my cuts better. When I’m in my routes, I come out of my routes better.”
At 5'10", he has carried as much as 242 pounds on his frame and even though he is down in size, he knows it is one of his strongest attributes at the next level. He ran for over 800 yards, hauled in 23 catches and scored nine touchdowns as a senior, his best season in Baton Rouge "I think I proved I could be a back anywhere. My speed and my power showed this year. My vision and my acceleration.”
Success didn’t come quick for Williams. He had to wait his turn in Baton Rouge, especially with a once-in-a-generation talent entering LSU in the same recruiting class in 2014 “Going to LSU, I wanted to come here and I wanted to compete for a spot. I knew Leonard was the number one back in the nation but I had the mindset that I'm a great competitor. I just wanted to showcase my talent. All I needed was an opportunity.”
The Marrero native and John Ehret High product admits he is still a Saints fan and even met with the team earlier this week, noting that it went very well.
