TOLEDO, OH (WTVG/CNN) - Animal cruelty investigators are trying to locate the owner of a dog that froze to death after it was left outside in frigid temperatures Thursday.

Someone found the dog curled up on a porch of a house on King Street and called authorities.

But it was too late.

“It's a very needless death,” said Stephen Heaven, president of the Toledo Area Humane Society. “There was no reason for the dog to be out there. There was another dog inside so we don't know why the two were kept separate.”

The Humane Society said it's caring for another dog found malnourished and shivering inside the home.

According to The Blade, the dog's owner, Victor Vallejo Sr., 40, said he last saw the two American bullies days ago and left them both inside the home. The 3-year-old female was named Nanas, while the 4-year-old male is Haze. Vallejo said he loved his dogs and intended to breed them.

The utilities to the house were recently shut off, he said. Vallejo said he isn’t sure how Nanas got outside.

Vallejo will likely face charges.
