HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Hattiesburg Police officers and firefighters teamed up to host an annual Christmas shopping spree at Walmart for underprivileged children Thursday night.
The 6th "Shop with a Kid for Santa" gave nearly 70 children $50 each, to spend on toys or bikes.
This year, Lamar County deputies, members of the military and first responders also participated.
"We have some kids that have disabilities or kids that don't have their parents here and so we reach out to the schools to find kids in need and the schools are very supportive also," said motor officer Chad Young of the Hattiesburg Police Department.
"We all know there are kids in the area that if we didn't do this, they wouldn't have a Christmas, so that makes it that much more rewarding," said Battalion Chief Robert Stephens, of the Hattiesburg Fire Department.
The first "Shop with a Kid for Santa" was able to help just 13 children.
