NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

I usually leave a Saints game with an overall theme or feeling about what I just observed on the field. It typically jumps out at me right away, and this column is written.

But after Sunday, I was left with kind of a blah emotion. Their effort against the Jets was kind of weird. It certainly wasn’t an overly impressive victory to celebrate, but nonetheless, a win in the NFL by double digits is nothing they have to apologize for.

Dodging a bullet may be the more accurate description. In reality, the game ended up being more of a cautionary tale of what could happen if the Saints lose focus.

That’s really what happened Sunday. The Saints simply lost focus at bad times and let a team they’re clearly better than hang around a little too long for comfort. Whether it was back-to-back fumbles in the red zone in third and fourth quarters or a dumb personal foul that needlessly prolonged a Jets drive, the Saints kept shooting themselves in the foot.

They also got unlucky around the end zone. Mark Ingram appeared to score a touchdown on his 54-yard reception in the first quarter. Michael Thomas got two touchdowns overturned by replay. The Saints scored a touchdown on Thomas’ first overturn. But on the other two, they only netted three points. More points in those circumstances would have changed the post-game vibe completely.

“We made it a lot harder than it needed to be,” Drew Brees said after the game.

So true. This being the holiday season, the Saints seemed to be in the giving mood and gave the Jets way too many gifts. Those gifts will be costly if shared in the same abundance with better teams.

Teams like the one they’re hosting Christmas Eve.
