PINE BELT (WDAM) - Nov. 25 was a big day for small business across the United States.
It was Small Business Saturday.
It was started by American Express to focus attention on the importance of locally-owned businesses.
"It brings attention to small business, which to me, are the heart of America, what runs our economy, so I think it's a great idea," said Diane Shepherd, co-owner of Main Street Books in Hattiesburg.
"We're the businesses that volunteer in this community, we're the businesses that donate our time, we give back to our community," said Traci Goodwin, owner of FIG Boutique in Petal.
One Hattiesburg store owner said everyone wins when the community supports small business.
"You need to keep money at home, because everybody benefits from it," said Mel Johnston, owner of Beautiful Day in Hattiesburg. "Employers can hire more people, it's better for the tax base."
The first Small Business Saturday was in 2010.
