HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Saturday night shooting in the Hub City injured one and landed another behind bars.

Coby Butler, 56, of Hattiesburg was arrested Saturday night and charged with one count of aggravated assault.

Hattiesburg Police Captain Branden McLemore said both the suspect and victim are homeless, and the shooting happened in a homeless camp in the wooded area behind 5696 U.S. 49. around 6 p.m.

“The victim, was shot in the chest with a pellet rifle,” said Hattiesburg Police Captain Branden McLemore. “The suspect, Coby Butler, called 911 and claimed the victim had been shooting at him, so he shot back.”

McLemore added that as their investigation continued, they determined the victim had been shooting a .22 caliber rifle at beer cans.

“The suspect apparently got mad at him and shot him with the pellet rifle,” said McLemore.

The victim was transported to Forrest General Hospital and was taken to surgery after they determined the pellet went into the victims heart.
