HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - In the big moments and on the big stage, big time players are expected to show up.
That's exactly what John Bolton did last week to help Purvis defeat Florence. The win advanced the Tornadoes to the third round of the Class 4A playoffs.
"Real physical with his runs and made some big plays for us," Tornadoes coach Perry Wheat said. "That's kind of what he's done all year. "He's had a good year but I think the last few weeks he's picked his game up a little bit."
Bolton said the playoff season simply means it's time to step it up a notch.
"Just working hard all week and coming in knowing we had to win," Bolton said. "Playoffs...that's s good time to kind of come in and set the tone and make sure everything is going good."
Bolton isn't a stranger to big performances. He actually was a player of the week a year ago. Pretty soon Bolton will be looking to make plays at the next level.
"Anything right now," Bolton said. "I'm open to all schools and hopefully something comes in. I'm just going to continue to play hard and hopefully I get the big offer I'm looking for."
Wheat doesn't doubt his running back star will get to his desired destination.
"Yeah I think he's got all the ability he needs, he said. "He's got to continue to work and he's blessed with good speed and good vision running. So he's going to do what he's got to do to keep playing."
Before Bolton leaves for the college game, though, there are more playoff games to be won. Awaiting the running back and his teammates is top ranked Poplarville.
"Practicing," Bolton said. "That's the most important time and we gotta keep getting better. I know coach Wheat believes in us and we're going to keep working hard."
