Medal of Honor recipient who tried to save aviator Brown in Korea dies

CONCORD, MASS. (WDAM) - The Medal of Honor recipient who risked his life to try and save Hattiesburg war hero Ensign Jesse L. Brown during the Korean War has died.

Retired Navy Captain Thomas Hudner, Jr., of Concord Massachusetts, passed away Tuesday.

He was 93.

In December, 1950, Hudner intentionally crashed his airplane on a mountainside during combat, in an attempt to rescue Brown, who had just been shot down.

Brown was the nation's first black naval aviator.

Hudner was unable to save Brown, but was awarded the Medal of Honor four months later.

Funeral services will be held Thursday.

He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
