PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The Petal Panthers have been in playoff mode for several weeks now, having to win their final regular season games against George County and Terry to qualify for the class 6A playoffs.

Petal (8-4) enters the second round of the "official" postseason this week at Meridian (6-6). The Panthers fell to the Wildcats 28-21 on October 20. Petal expects a similar battle in the class 6A South State semifinals on Friday.

"When we lost to Meridian, the mindset was 'win or go home,'" said Petal senior wide receiver Nataurean Watts. "So that's what we're trying to do. Either win or you go home so we're trying to work hard, play our hearts out and just win every game."

"We had to win our last two regular season games and if we didn't we weren't going to make the playoffs," Boyles said. "So we've kind of been in this mindset of 'win or go home.' Our kids have handled it really well. This is an exciting time of the year to be playing the playoffs. This is what you work for from January all through the hot months of summer, to be playing a little bonus football."

Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
