HATTIESBURG, MS -

Senator Juan Barnett fed members of the community Monday. Along with several volunteers, Barnett handed out plates at the Glendale Community Center in Hattiesburg.

Barnett represents Senate District 34 in the Mississippi Senate and started this program over 15 years ago.

“I’m just honored to have the opportunity to give back, especially to the senior citizens," Barnett said. "I just want them to know that they’re still special in this season of Thanksgiving.”

Volunteers included students from North Forrest High School. Barnett told WDAM that it’s important for the students to serve the community.

“In 2002 when I started, I thought it would be really good to involve the students," Barnett said. "It’s important to give back, and to give someone a helping hand."

Barnett is holding another event Monday afternoon at the C.E. Roy Community Center, and he's already looking ahead to next year. Barnett told WDAM that he plans to host another event in 2018.
