PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Petal High School hosted a Veterans Day celebration on Thursday.

Staff and students honored the people who've served and sacrificed for our country during an event held at the Petal High School Performing Arts Building.

Veterans from around the area were greeted with waving flags and patriotic songs. Presenting the colors was the Petal High School Junior ROTC.

"It's an absolute thrill that so many people have showed up to honor these veterans and what they've done for their country throughout the years and all the wars America's fought," said U.S. Army Captain William Crowe. "We have veterans today from as far back as World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and the War in the Gulf. I've personally served both in Iraq and Afghanistan in the more recent wars, so seeing those who came before me is truly an honor."

The oldest veteran at today's event was 91-years old and was stationed on the USS Register, a Navy high-speed transport vessel.

The event included a breakfast before the program started.

As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
