Laurel police arrest one armed robbery suspect, one at large

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Laurel police arrested a suspect following an armed robbery early Wednesday morning. 

Officers responded to the Alliance Energy Gas Station located at 313 South 16th Avenue in Laurel at approximately 1:31 a.m., according to a Laurel PD press release.

"Two guys just walked in one in front of the other, said gas station owner Jagdeo Singh. "One of them took the cashier behind the cash register."

Holding her at gunpoint demanding cash.

"The second guy came around the counter after and stole cigarettes," Singh said. "The clerk was very shook up, but before they got out she called 9-1-1."

According to Singh, Laurel police were at the store almost immediately.

Within minutes a suspect matching the description was arrested near the scene. According to police, Jonathon Rashod Cooley possessed items taken from the store at the time of his arrest. 

Cooley is charged with armed robbery and had his bond set at $35,000. 

"I'm proud to know we have a police department like Laurel that acts so quickly," Singh said. "This is what will deter criminals from attempting to do the same thing."

    A fire breaks out in Hattiesburg, overnight. Right now fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a car to catch fire under the homeowner's carport. That blaze quickly spread to the home on Longino Road, according to the Hattiesburg Fire Department. Firefighters were able to save the home, however the car and carport were destroyed. The homeowner was inside the home when the fire ignited, luckily she was able to get out of the home with no injuries.

    On July 20, thirty-year-old Kalisa Rambert brought a small amount of spice into the Forrest County Jail through a pair socks. Authorities says she was visiting someone in the facility.  When authorities checked her belongings, they found the drugs and booked her on charges of introduction of contraband into a correctional facility.
