2 inmate deaths in a week in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Two inmates have died in the past week after experiencing medical problems at the New Orleans jail.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed Monday that 32-year-old Narada Mealey, from the suburb of Harvey, died Thursday. He was taken to a hospital on Oct. 29 after being examined by jail medical personnel.

The sheriff's news release didn't detail Mealey's medical problems. However, Mealey's aunt told The New Orleans Advocate that Mealey had been suffering from an ulcer and that family members believe he should have had medical attention sooner.

On Sunday, 27-year-old Evan Sullivan died at a hospital after being found unresponsive in a jail housing unit. The sheriff's office said Sullivan died "of apparent natural causes."

The coroner's office didn't respond to an emailed request for information Monday.
