HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of athletes from three states gathered at Southern Miss Saturday for a first-ever wheelchair basketball tournament.
Teams from Louisiana and Alabama joined a USM team for the first Golden Eagles Invitational.
Organizers wanted to show that adaptive sports opportunities like wheelchair basketball are available in the Pine Belt.
The Southern Miss team has 13 on its roster and it was started about five years ago.
It is sponsored by the university's Institute for Disability Studies.
A team from Mobile, AL finished in first place.
Southern Miss finished second place in the tournament, and a team from Lafayette, LA finished in third place.
