HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The men of the Hattiesburg Police Department will be looking a little scruffy for the month of November.

They will be participating in 'No Shave November' to raise money for the department’s benevolent fund.

“If you see our men looking a little scruffy with beards and stuff, we’re gone be doing No Shave November," said Hattiesburg Police Chief Anthony Parker. “We will be doing it all for a good cause.”

Officers will pay $25 and get to grow out their beards, and female officers can pay the fee, and have their name entered for a chance to win a massage gift card.

He said it’s all in the spirit of giving, especially around this time of the year.

“We do a lot of things at Christmas time, for the disadvantaged children, our victim’s advocates do a lot of stuff, so we contribute to that,” Parker said.

“Basically, it’s an opportunity for us to give back to the community, give back to those people that support us, is our everyday duties and I believe I’m up to the challenge,” said Hattiesburg Police Capt. Branden McLemore.

“Well it goes to a good cause," said Hattiesburg Police Officer Erick Mitcham. "You know the benevolent fund has helped a lot of officers in the past and you know, these guys are my family, so when I see someone in need and someone’s willing to help, I’ll do anything I can."

The community will get a chance to weigh in as well, over on the Hattiesburg Police Department’s Facebook page. There will be a variety of categories to vote on.

“People’s choice, the best try, the cast away, the most intimidating, I might win that one too,” Parker said. “I see one category there, the St. Nick…that I might be in contention for, If you see a 6 foot 4 man with a white beard, you know that’s Chief Parker.”

Photos of participating officers will be posted on the department’s Facebook page to track each officer’s progress. At the end of November, the public will have an opportunity to vote on a “People’s Choice” award for best beard. On Dec. 1, the department will host a small ceremony to present the following awards among participants:

  • People’s Choice
  • Best Try
  • The Castaway
  • The Natural
  • The St. Nick
