HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Mississippi Highway Patrol's Cadet Class 62 began its training on Sunday.

The class began training at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy with 91 recruits and 29 alternates, according to MHP Captain Johnny Poulos. Alternates will replace cadets that resign the class.

The training will last 19 weeks with a projected graduation date of March 6, 2018. Currently, there are 465 active MHP troopers, though there are 650 slots allotted and 148 troopers are currently eligible to retire.

Public Safety Commissioner Marshall Fisher has put in a request to state lawmakers to budget for another class following Cadet Class 62.
