HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker released a statement on the closing of a green energy plant in Hattiesburg.
On Tuesday, Stion notified the state that it would be closing its Hattiesburg plant on Dec. 13 and laying off its 137 employees, according to the Associated Press.
"Anytime a business entity closes in our city, it brings great disappointment," Barker wrote in an email. "However, we will work with local and state partners to connect those needing work with job opportunities. We will also work to leverage that facility into another future manufacturing opportunity for the Hub City."
According to the AP report, Stion pledged 1,000 jobs when it announced its plans in 2011, and Mississippi initially loaned the company $74.8 million and millions more in tax breaks.
