PETAL, MS (WDAM) - A damaged historic skating rink has left a Forrest County official and the Mayor of Petal at odds.
The building, located on South Main Street and formerly the Petal skating rink, was damaged by the tornado that struck Petal back in January. District 3 Supervisor Burkett Ross, owner of the building, said the city is preventing him from making the necessary repairs. The amount of substantial damage is in question as Ross said it only around 25 percent damaged, while Mayor Hal Marx said the building is over 50 percent damaged.
Marx said the building is becoming a public health concern.
"We cannot allow him to repair the building or the city can be endanger of losing its flood insurance for all our citizens, so we're just trying to follow the state law, follow our ordinances and our codes." Marx said. "The board gave him 30 days to begin to tear the building down. If he does not, then we have the authority under the state law to enter that property and to tear that building down, and then of course the cost of that will be assessed to his property tax as a lien against the property."
We spoke to Ross over the phone and he said, if necessary, he will seek legal counsel to make sure the building isn't torn down.
