HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss defeated UTEP 24-0 on Saturday, but it took a moment for the Golden Eagle offense to get going.
USM turned to a freshman to kick-start its offense. Wide receiver Jaylond Adams hauled in a 52-yard touchdown from Keon Howard to put the Eagles on the board in the first quarter.
It was the first touchdown of Adams' career as the Adamsville, Alabama native finished with a career-high 104 receiving yards on two catches.
"It felt amazing to be able to get my first touchdown and make some big plays for my team," Adams said. "It felt amazing. Every week at a time, my confidence level gets higher and higher just being around a positive group of guys."
"Another freshman that did a good job," said USM head coach Jay Hopson. "Jaylond had two really clutch catches, the first one for the touchdown that kind of gets us going. I thought Jaylond played extremely well. He's a youngster that's just going to get better. I'm just proud of the effort he gave tonight."
