Hattiesburg veteran gets new home repairs

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Home Depot Foundation partnered with the Purple Heart Homes to repair the home of local veteran and three-time cancer survivor Jerry Holliman.

Before being honorably discharged in 2010, Holliman served in Vietnam, Egypt, and Iraq over a 40-year period.

He survived three-counts of cancer because of exposure to Agent Orange. According to coordinators, his home suffered external and internal damage from a tornado earlier this year.

In conjunction with the City of Hattiesburg and Keesler Federal Credit Union, over 10 Home Depot associates came together on their day to make repairs.

Coordinators say repairs included a fresh paint job and replacement of fascia and gutters. They also added a ramp and a remote-control garage to make Holliman's home more accessible.

The project is a part of Home Depot's annual Celebration of Service campaign to improve the homes and lives of U.S. Military veterans and their families.

Sponsors say Holliman's home is the first of many veteran homes that the foundation will be repairing. Currently, they say they are working on a special ceremony for the final home November 11, 2017.
