HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - For the second time this season and second time in his career, Southern Miss running back Ito Smith earned Conference USA Offensive Player of the week honors.
The honor came after Smith rushed for 178 yards on 17 carries, including an 89-yard touchdown run in the Golden Eagles' 31-29 win over UTSA.
The senior's touchdown scamper marked the longest scoring run in school history and hoped him move ahead of Ben Garry and Derrick Nix to second place on USM's all-time rushing list. Smith now has 3,736 career rushing yards after his third straight 100-yard game.
"Ito's Ito," said USM head coach Jay Hopson. "We could say the same thing, it'd be like a rewinded tape. Ito's just a football player. And he's a guy that made another big play but he's been doing that for three years. Ito's a humble guy too and he deserves everything he gets. He just goes to work."
