Mississippi doctor charged with 17 counts of medical fraud

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) - Attorney General Jim Hood announced the arrest of a Cleveland, Miss. doctor on Tuesday.

Bolivar County Sheriff's deputies arrested Dr. Harold Peltan, 50, and charged him with 17 counts of Medical Fraud, according to authorities.

Peltan is a Cleveland ophthalmologist accused of billing patients for care he did not provide, creating false bills during post-operative periods and billing for care that was not medically necessary. According to the indictment, the alleged fraud occurred between July 2011 and July 2014.

For each count, Peltan faces up to five years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines. He is currently awaiting bond and court dates.

The case was investigated and will be prosecuted by the AG's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
