Funeral arrangements set for longtime lawman

SUMRALL, MS (WDAM) -

Funeral arrangements have been set for a longtime Pine Belt lawman. 

Retired Sumrall Police Department Chief Willie Preston died on Sunday following a lengthy illness.

He began his career working with the public works department before being appointed as a police officer .

Preston graduated the police academy in 1981 at the age of 36. Three years later, he was named police chief where he faithfully served for 27 years. 

Preston was chief from 1984 to 2011. 

Visitation will be on held on Friday at 9 a.m.to 6 p.m. at the McSwain and Myers Funeral Home. 

The funeral home is located at 1317 Hardy Street, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. 

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. 

The church is located at 169 Center Ave, Sumrall, MS 39482. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Church Cemetery on Highway 589 in Covington County.

    The Mississippi Department of Corrections has locked down all prisons in its system for the weekend.  MDOC announced the weekend lockdown on Twitter on Friday, saying that there would be no visitation, commissary or outside recreation this weekend.     With inclement weather expected Sunday, the University of Southern Mississippi will wrap up its Conference USA baseball series with Middle Tennessee State University with a Saturday doubleheader at Pete Taylor Park. The first game will start at 1:30 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than the originally-scheduled 2 p.m. start. The second game will begin about 45 minutes at the conclusion of the opener.
