(RNN) - The New England coast is under a tropical storm watch as Hurricane Jose inches westward.

New Jersey, Delaware, Long Island Sound, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are all in the possible path of Jose, according to the National Hurricane Center, and all along the East Coast dangerous surf and rip currents are expected.

Jose has maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and is located 305 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, NC, moving north at 9 mph.

The NHC says the Category 1 storm could bring rain and wind to the northeastern US later this week. Swells generated by the storm are currently affecting much of the U.S. east coast as well as Bermuda, the Bahamas and the northern coasts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.

Jose is one of three named storms currently active in the Atlantic.

Hurricane Maria, which formed Saturday, was upgraded to a hurricane with the NHC's 5 p.m. advisory. Maria is 140 miles east-northeast of Barbados and 275 miles east-southeast of Dominica with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

Hurricane warnings are in effect for St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe and Dominica.

In addition, tropical storm warnings are in effect for St. Lucia, Martinique, Antigue and Barbuda. There also various tropical storm watches.

Several of these Caribbean islands, including Barbuda and St. Maarten, were devastated when Hurricane Irma hit them, only 10 days ago.

Tropical Storm Maria is forecast to continue west-northwest over the next couple days, with the center nearing the Leeward Islands on Monday night.

A third storm, Lee, has been downgraded to a tropical depression. Lee formed Saturday in the eastern Atlantic and is moving westward. It's maximum sustained winds are 35 mph.
