WCU dedicates new sports facility

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Administrators, faculty and student-athletes at William Carey University gathered Friday morning to officially open a new, multi-million dollar sports complex.

The Ben Waddle Sports Facility will be used as a volleyball and multipurpose building.

The construction cost was more than $2.5 million.

Construction work began months before the Jan. 21 tornado that damaged or destroyed much of the WCU campus.

The sports facility was untouched by the storm.

It is named in honor of longtime WCU faculty member Ben Waddle, who first came to the university in 1967.

It will be used by the university's volleyball team, which was organized in 2016.

It is located next to the university's new state-of-the-art track, which will be used for school's track and field program, which was established in 2014.

It cost more than $1.7 million dollars to build.

Junior varsity basketball and the WCU band will also use the sports facility.

Intramural activities will also take place there.
