LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - West Jones had a couple of weeks to prepare for its second-round matchup with Pearl River Central on Friday night. The Mustangs earned a bye in the class 5A playoffs by winning region 5-5A.
"This is a school where the baseball tradition is pretty rich and you're expected to make a run every year," said West Jones head coach Trey Sutton. "We're up for the challenge and looking forward to getting going with it."
Sutton, a three-time All-Conference USA player at Southern Miss, has led West Jones to a 17-8 record in just his first season as the head coach. The Mustangs look to avenge their loss to the Blue Devils in the third round of the 2016 playoffs.
"This program's been through a lot and coach Sutton coming in this year has made a huge change," said West Jones senior outfielder Trey Desantis. "Just the way we do everything. We worked hard all fall and we just felt like we really were prepared for this year."
