Dog food recalled, possibly contaminated with euthanasia drug

(RNN) - A pet food company has recalled two kinds of beef-and-poultry canned dog foods after tests showed it contained a euthanasia drug used on animals.

Party Animal Inc. said last Monday that a customer in Texas gave samples of the food to a lab, and the samples tested positive for pentobarbital, a sedative commonly used by veterinarians to euthanize dogs and cats.

The customer presented the samples and tests to a retailer, who informed the company.

The company said the tests involved 13-ounce cans of Cocolicious Beef and Turkey, and Cocolicious Beef and Chicken.

The lot numbers showed the food in question had been manufactured in 2015. The company contacted the Texas retailer and told them to isolate all remaining cans from that lot.

They ask that dog owners check if they have either of the lot numbers in question, and if they do, to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

They also have asked all retailers to send the returned and unsold cans for independent testing.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we are retrieving the remainder of those two lots nationwide," Party Animal said in a press release. "We want to emphasize that they have submitted multiple lots of recently manufactured beef flavors for testing and all came back showing negative for pentobarbital."

Party Animals said it has tested its other brands of food, and none have shown any evidence of the drug.

Customers should check for these lot numbers, according to the FDA:

Lot No. 0136E15204 04, best by July 2019,

Lot No. 0134E15 237 13, best by August 2019.
